Is it Friday yet? It sure feels like it should be…
Anyway, here’s a few little changes that have gone on to my dear secretary desk lately (sadly, neither of them are picking up the top cabinet – seen here – oh well!).
First up, I finally gave up the ghost on the dead flowers you saw here last time (although the flower on the left is doing its best to die too!) and replaced it with some basil. Isn’t it funny how it seems weird to have basil anywhere other than the kitchen? Well, no windows in the kitchen… massive window by the desk.
I also added a few knick-knacks, a picture of my parents way back when and some postcards I’ve received lately.
Inside, I added my external hard-drive to one of the cubbies. Do you see it? Thought not! It’s been disguised with a sheet of patterned origami paper from Muji.
And I’ve run the power cord through the back with a big shoddy hole made by drilling lots of small holes. I was going to make some other holes for things like my laptop cord (I keep my laptop in one of the long horizontal cubbies), but I made such a bad job of this hole, I figured I’d wait until I’d bought a better drill bit (a hole saw drill bit?) so it looks a bit neater (as the other hole will be a lot more visible).
So that’s a few little tweaks I’ve made in our house this week. What have you tweaked this week?

I tweak things A LOT, especially at work. I get bored so I re-arrange things. Except, I usually get interrupted in the middle of it, and then it takes me a few weeks to get back to doing it – oops! I love how you disguised your external hard drive! Genius.
Are postcards a regular thing on your end of the world? I’ve never received a post card in my life, I don’t think.
Hmm, I’d say semi regular? It’s definitely really normal to send postcards from holiday. But I’ve been making a real effort to send cards to the friends I left behind in London, so I’ve been getting some back! X
I love the secretary. And I’d hide all the cords if I could… they’re awful. Nice upgrades!
I know! Sadly there’s no sockets anywhere near the desk so some cords are inevitable. Dastardly things!
I love that you send postcards to your friends (it makes me want to do it to take a break from email). And such a smart fix for your secretary desk! That’s the one bummer about older furniture – it’s not made to accommodate cords.
It is really fun! The key is to have lots of cards and stamps at all times (and to write anything you like, my friend sent me one the other day that was just a funny list of things she’d done since quitting her job!).
Too true about older furniture (and old houses never have enough sockets! My old bedroom in a 1930s house had one pair of sockets for the whole room – and they were right by the door.
I can’t get over how adorable that secretary desk is! The beautiful flowers add a lot to the desk!
Thanks Ashley!
What a smart idea to disguise your external hard drive! I have two and I just hide them behind my computer monitor but I still know their back there being ugly and hard to reach, so this is such a great solution! Thanks!!
Hey, hiding things is totally legit too! I just never remember to back up if my hard drive isn’t RIGHT there!
Seems like everyone is doing some sort of cleaning or tidying up this week. I’ve been working on clearing out my house all week!
It must be spring!
I love the green and the yellow against the wooden desk. Perfection. And great idea to disguise that hard drive–unsightly pesky electronics are always taking over our office space.
Me too! When I eventually get the cabinet here I’ll be sure to put some yellow and green in there.
Thanks erin!
What a GORGEOUS secretary desk!
Thanks Ashley! I’m in love with it!
